DIVINUM OFFICIUM Antiphon

Antiphona ad Magnificat

Christ the King - II Vespers Magnificat

About This Prayer

From Daniel 7:14, this antiphon describes the Son of Man's kingdom: 'Potestas ejus, potestas aeterna, quae non auferetur' (his power is an everlasting power that shall not be taken away). The phrase 'regnum ejus, quod non corrumpetur' (his kingdom shall not be destroyed) employs the verb corrumpere, meaning to corrupt, destroy, or cause to decay. Unlike earthly kingdoms subject to internal corruption and external conquest, Christ's realm is incorruptible. At Second Vespers, closing the feast, this antiphon from Daniel's vision summarizes the day's celebration: we have honored a King whose crown no usurper can seize, whose throne no revolution can overturn.
