Antiphona 3

Canticles 1:5 provides this paradoxical self-description, extensively interpreted by patristic authors. 'Nigra sum sed formosa' (I am black but beautiful) - the blackness was understood as either sun-darkening from labor (v. 6) or as mystical darkness before illumination. Applied to Mary, it suggests her hidden life of humility before the Magnificat's exaltation. The 'Rex' who loved her and led her into his chamber is Christ. At Vespers, as evening shadows gather, this antiphon contemplates the mystery that true beauty may appear dark to worldly eyes but is radiant to the divine Bridegroom.
