DIVINUM OFFICIUM Responsory

Responsorium Breve

Common of One Martyr - None Brief Responsory

About This Prayer

Psalm 8:6 provides this coronation text, originally describing humanity's dignity in creation. Applied to martyrs, it reveals that martyrdom restores the glory Adam lost. The 'gloria et honore' (glory and honor) are regal attributes - the martyr receives a crown, not merely a reward. The versicle 'super opera manuum tuarum' (over the works of thy hands) recalls Genesis 1:28's dominion mandate, now restored in the martyr's heavenly authority. At None, Christ's hour of death and exaltation (Philippians 2:8-9), this responsory shows martyrdom as participating in Christ's paschal pattern: suffering leading to glorification.
