Nunc Dimittis (Ordinary with Alleluia)
Paschaltide (after Octave): Alleluia added to Salva nos antiphon
About This Prayer
The Nunc Dimittis with the Salva nos antiphon augmented by Alleluia, used after the Easter Octave through Pentecost. While the more festive fourfold Alleluia of the Octave gives way to the ordinary antiphon, the appended Alleluia maintains the joyful character of the Great Fifty Days. The canticle retains its baptismal resonance.
Prayer Text
LATINE
Ant. Salva nos, Domine, vigilantes, custodi nos dormientes: ut vigilemus cum Christo, et requiescamus in pace. Alleluia. Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace. Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum, quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum: Lumen ad revelationem gentium, et gloriam plebis tuae Israel. Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen. Ant. Salva nos, Domine, vigilantes, custodi nos dormientes: ut vigilemus cum Christo, et requiescamus in pace. Alleluia.
ENGLISH
Ant. Save us, O Lord, while waking, and guard us while sleeping: that we may watch with Christ, and rest in peace. Alleluia. Now Thou dost dismiss Thy servant, O Lord, according to Thy word in peace. Because my eyes have seen Thy salvation, which Thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples: A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of Thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Ant. Save us, O Lord, while waking, and guard us while sleeping: that we may watch with Christ, and rest in peace. Alleluia.
