Hymnus
Attr. St. Ambrose. Trans. Card. J.H. Newman
About This Prayer
Nunc Sancte nobis Spiritus is the hymn for Terce (the third hour, 9:00 AM) attributed to St. Ambrose. The third hour commemorates Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles. The hymn invokes the Spirit who is eternally one with the Father and Son to fill our souls with holiness. Cardinal Newman's translation preserves the hymn's invocation of the Spirit's sevenfold gifts.

ENGLISH
Come, Holy Ghost, who ever One
Art with the Father and the Son,
It is the hour, our souls possess
With Thy full flood of holiness.
Art with the Father and the Son,
It is the hour, our souls possess
With Thy full flood of holiness.
Let flesh, and heart, and lips, and mind,
Sound forth our witness to mankind;
And love light up our mortal frame,
Till others catch the living flame.
Sound forth our witness to mankind;
And love light up our mortal frame,
Till others catch the living flame.
Grant this, O Father, ever One
With Christ, Thy sole-begotten Son,
And Holy Ghost, whom all adore,
Reigning and blest forevermore. Amen.
With Christ, Thy sole-begotten Son,
And Holy Ghost, whom all adore,
Reigning and blest forevermore. Amen.
