1 PETRI 5:8-9

Your Adversary the Devil

About This Prayer

1 Peter 5:8-9 warns: 'Be sober and watch, because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour.' Peter, who denied Christ three times, here exhorts steadfastness. The image of the roaring lion emphasizes both the danger and the noise of demonic attack, which can be resisted by those who stand firm in faith.

Prayer Text

LATINE
Sobrii estote et vigilate,
quia adversarius vester diabolus
tamquam leo rugiens circuit
quaerens quem devoret.
Cui resistite fortes in fide,
scientes eandem passionem
ei quae in mundo est vestrae fraternitati fieri.
ENGLISH
Be sober and watch:
because your adversary the devil,
as a roaring lion, goeth about
seeking whom he may devour.
Whom resist ye, strong in faith:
knowing that the same affliction
befalls your brethren who are in the world.
