PER VITIA CAPITALIA · DE INVIDIA

Capital Sins - Envy

About This Prayer

Envy is sorrow at another's good. It is diabolical because it grieves at what should cause joy. From envy flow hatred, detraction, joy at another's misfortune, and sorrow at another's prosperity. Its contrary virtue is brotherly love.

Num in infortuniis aliorum gavisus sum?
et eis in omnibus bene optandi.
Ab omni invidia et malevolentia,
libera me, Domine.
ENGLISH
Envy is sorrow at another's good.
Have I been saddened by the good fortune, talents, or success of others?
Have I rejoiced at the misfortunes of others?
Have I been jealous of the possessions, abilities, or relationships of others?
Have I spoken ill of others out of envy?
Have I tried to diminish the reputation or accomplishments of others?
Have I been resentful when others have been praised or preferred?
Have I wished harm to those I envy?
Have I failed to rejoice with those who rejoice?
Lord, grant me the grace to rejoice in the good of others
and to wish them well in all things.
From all envy and ill-will,
deliver me, O Lord.

CONTEXT
Envy is the sin most directly opposed to charity. It was through the devil's envy that death entered the world (Wisdom 2:24), making it a particularly satanic vice.
