EXAMEN IGNATIANIVM · PROPOSITVM

Ignatian Examen - Resolution

About This Prayer

The fifth step resolves with God's grace to amend one's life. True contrition must include a firm purpose of amendment - sincere intention to avoid sin and its occasions. The Jesus Prayer ('Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner') from the Eastern hesychast tradition provides a powerful conclusion.

Prayer Text

LATINE
Propono cum gratia tua vitam meam emendare.
Deus meus, firmiter propono, adiuvante gratia tua,
amplius non peccare et proximas peccandi occasiones vitare.
Emendationem vitae propono:
promptius resistere primis motibus tentationis,
cautius vitare personas, loca, et res quae me in peccatum induxerunt,
fidelius exercere virtutes contrarias peccatis meis habitualis,
et diligentius uti mediis gratiae—oratione, sacramentis, et lectione spirituali.
Cor Iesu Sacratissimum,
miserere nobis.
Cor Mariae Immaculatum,
ora pro nobis.
Sancte Ioseph,
ora pro nobis.
Domine Iesu Christe, Fili Dei vivi, miserere mei, peccatoris.
ENGLISH
I resolve with Thy grace to amend my life.
O my God, I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace,
to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin.
I purpose amendment of life:
to resist more promptly the first movements of temptation,
to avoid more carefully the persons, places, and things that have led me into sin,
to practise more faithfully the virtues contrary to my besetting sins,
and to use more diligently the means of grace—prayer, the sacraments, and spiritual reading.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,
have mercy on us.
Immaculate Heart of Mary,
pray for us.
St. Joseph,
pray for us.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
