DIVINUM OFFICIUM Antiphon

Antiphona ad Benedictus

Christ the King - Lauds Benedictus

About This Prayer

This Benedictus antiphon draws from Matthew 24:30-31, the eschatological discourse: 'Videbunt Filium hominis venientem in nubibus caeli cum virtute multa et majestate' (they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with much power and majesty). The 'nubes caeli' (clouds of heaven) echo Daniel 7:13, identifying Jesus with the messianic figure who receives everlasting dominion. The sending of angels 'et congregabit electos suos a quatuor ventis' (and shall gather his elect from the four winds) describes the eschatological ingathering. Framing the Benedictus, this antiphon orients Zechariah's prophecy toward its fulfillment at the Parousia: Christ the King will be visibly enthroned when He returns in glory.
