Common of Feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Sext Chapter from Ecclesiasticus 24:15

About This Prayer

Sirach 24:11 continues Wisdom's self-description, applied to Mary. 'In Sion firmata sum' (I was established in Sion) recalls Mary's presentation in the Temple according to the Protoevangelium of James, and her dwelling in Jerusalem with the apostles after Pentecost. The 'civitas sanctificata' (holy city) is both earthly Jerusalem and the heavenly city (Apocalypse 21:2). Her 'potestas in Ierusalem' (power in Jerusalem) refers to her queenship - the Gebirah (queen mother) exercised real authority in Davidic monarchy (1 Kings 2:19). At Sext, Mary's power is shown precisely at Christ's hour of apparent powerlessness on the cross.
