Capitulum
Common of One Martyr - None Chapter from Apocalypse 2:17
About This Prayer
Apocalypse 2:17 addresses the church at Pergamum, 'where Satan's throne is' (2:13). The 'manna absconditum' (hidden manna) recalls the golden jar of manna kept in the Ark (Hebrews 9:4) - heavenly food surpassing earthly sustenance. The 'calculus candidus' (white stone) likely references the tessera hospitalis of Roman custom, a token of friendship, or the voting stone of acquittal. The 'nomen novum' (new name) indicates transformed identity, as Abram became Abraham. At None (3 PM), Christ's hour of death, this promises the martyr intimate communion with Christ that the persecutors can never destroy.
