Ave Regina Caelorum (Complete)
From February 2 (Purification/Candlemas) to Wednesday of Holy Week inclusive
About This Prayer
Ave Regina Caelorum ('Hail, Queen of Heaven') is the Marian antiphon sung at Compline from February 2 (Candlemas) through Wednesday of Holy Week. This 12th-century antiphon hails Mary as Queen, as root (radix) from whom the Light of the world has sprung, and as the gate (porta) through which salvation entered. The faithful beg her to rejoice in her glory and to intercede for them. The seasonal placement - from the Presentation to Passiontide - connects Mary's purification to her Son's Passion.
Prayer Text
LATINE
Ave, Regina caelorum, Ave, Domina Angelorum: Salve, radix, salve, porta, Ex qua mundo lux est orta: Gaude, Virgo gloriosa, Super omnes speciosa, Vale, o valde decora, Et pro nobis Christum exora.
V. Dignare me laudare te, Virgo sacrata. R. Da mihi virtutem contra hostes tuos.
Oremus. Concede, misericors Deus, fragilitati nostrae praesidium; ut, qui sanctae Dei Genitricis memoriam agimus; intercessionis ejus auxilio, a nostris iniquitatibus resurgamus. Per eumdem Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.
ENGLISH
Hail, O Queen of heaven enthroned. Hail, by angels Mistress owned. Root of Jesse, gate of morn, Whence the world's true light was born: Glorious Virgin, joy to thee, Loveliest whom in heaven they see: Fairest thou where all are fair, Plead with Christ our sins to spare.
V. My praise by thee accepted be, O Holy Virgin. R. Give me strength against thine enemies.
Let us pray. Grant, O merciful God, Thy protection in our weakness: that we who celebrate the memory of the holy Mother of God, may, through the aid of her intercession, rise again from our sins. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
