About This Prayer
Regina Caeli ('Queen of Heaven, rejoice') is the joyful Marian antiphon of Eastertide, sung at Compline from Easter Sunday through the Saturday after Pentecost. Dating to the 12th century or earlier, this antiphon is distinguished by its exultant tone and the four-fold 'Alleluia.' It recalls Mary's unique role in the Resurrection: she who bore Christ in her womb now rejoices that He is risen as He promised. According to legend, Pope Gregory the Great heard angels singing this antiphon during a procession through Rome at Eastertime.
