ORDINARIVM

AVE MARIA

The Hail Mary

About This Prayer

The Hail Mary unites two Scriptural salutations: Gabriel's greeting at the Annunciation (Luke 1:28) and Elizabeth's blessing at the Visitation (Luke 1:42). The second half ('Holy Mary, Mother of God...') was added by the Church in the 15th century. The title 'Mother of God' (Theotokos) was defined at the Council of Ephesus (431).
