PER VITIA CAPITALIA · DE IRA
Capital Sins - Anger
About This Prayer
Anger is the inordinate desire for revenge. From anger flow quarreling, contention, clamor, indignation, blasphemy, and injury. While anger at injustice can be righteous, sinful anger seeks revenge beyond what is just. Its contrary virtue is meekness.
Ira est inordinatum desiderium vindictae. Ex ira fluunt rixa, contentio, clamor, indignatio, blasphemia, et iniuria.
Prayer Text
LATINE
Ira est inordinatum desiderium vindictae.
Num ad iram promptus fui?
Num temperamentum amisi vel verba dura in ira protuli?
Num quemquam in ira percussi?
Num rancorem, amaritudinem, vel vindictae desiderium fovi?
Num eis qui me laeserunt ignoscere recusavi?
Num erga defectus et infirmitates aliorum impatiens fui?
Num inurbanus, contemptiosus, vel contumeliosus fui?
Num alios ad iram provocavi?
Num iram ad peccandum me ducere permisi?
Domine, concede mihi gratiam vincendi malum in bono,
benedicendi maledicentibus mihi, et orandi pro persequentibus me.
Ab omni ira et odio,
libera me, Domine.
ENGLISH
Anger is the inordinate desire for revenge.
Have I been quick to anger?
Have I lost my temper or spoken harsh words in anger?
Have I struck anyone in anger?
Have I harboured resentment, bitterness, or a desire for revenge?
Have I refused to forgive those who have injured me?
Have I been impatient with others' faults and weaknesses?
Have I been rude, contemptuous, or insulting?
Have I provoked others to anger?
Have I allowed anger to lead me to sin?
Lord, grant me the grace to overcome evil with good,
to bless those who curse me, and to pray for those who persecute me.
From all anger and hatred,
deliver me, O Lord.

CONTEXT
Our Lord equated anger with murder in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5:22). Sinful anger differs from righteous indignation, which seeks just correction rather than revenge.
