ORATIO ANTE OPVS QVODLIBET

Prayer Before Any Work

About This Prayer

The 'Actiones nostras' from the Roman Missal is traditionally prayed before Mass and any important undertaking. Its petition that 'every prayer and work of ours may begin always with Thee and through Thee be happily ended' consecrates human labor to divine glory. This prayer expresses the principle that all action should be initiated and completed in God.

Prayer Text

LATINE
Actiones nostras, quaesumus Domine,
aspirando praeveni et adiuvando prosequere:
ut cuncta nostra oratio et operatio
a te semper incipiat, et per te coepta finiatur.
Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.
Praeveni nos, Domine, in omnibus actionibus nostris
gratia tua benignissima, et prosequere auxilio tuo continuo:
ut cuncta nostra operatio a te inchoata,
per te continuata et finita, sanctum nomen tuum glorificet,
et tandem, per tuam misericordiam, vitam aeternam consequamur.
Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.
ENGLISH
Direct, we beseech Thee, O Lord, our actions
by Thy holy inspirations, and grant that we may carry them out with Thy gracious assistance;
that every prayer and work of ours
may begin always with Thee, and through Thee be happily ended.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prevent us, O Lord, in all our doings
with Thy most gracious favor, and further us with Thy continual help;
that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in Thee,
we may glorify Thy holy Name,
and finally, by Thy mercy, obtain everlasting life.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
