VIA CRVCIS — STATIO I
Station I — Jesus Is Condemned to Death
About This Prayer
The Stations of the Cross trace Our Lord's path from condemnation to burial. This devotion, with meditations by St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787), carries a plenary indulgence under traditional conditions. The Via Crucis developed from the practice of pilgrims walking the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. St. Alphonsus's meditations are the most widely used in the Latin Rite.
Prayer Text
LATINE
Numquam permittas ut iterum a te separar.
Pater Noster. Ave Maria. Gloria Patri.
V. Miserere nostri, Domine.
R. Miserere nostri.
ENGLISH
V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world.
STATION I — Jesus Is Condemned to Death
Consider how Jesus Christ, after being scourged and crowned with thorns, was unjustly condemned by Pilate to die on the Cross.
My Jesus, it was not Pilate; no, it was my sins that condemned Thee to die. I beseech Thee, by the merits of this sorrowful journey, to assist my soul on its journey to eternity.
I love Thee, my Jesus, above all things; I repent with my whole heart of having offended Thee. Never permit me to separate myself from Thee again. Grant that I may love Thee always, and then do with me what Thou wilt.
Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory Be.
V. Have mercy on us, O Lord.
R. Have mercy on us.
